November is National Novel Writing Month!
Yes, it CAN be done, and you’re invited to participate. It’s no easy task, but every year thousands of students and adults participate in NaNoWriMo and win. That is, they achieve their word-count goals and win the presigious honor of calling themselves novelists. There is an official nanowrimo website that is set up for adults, and an additional Young Writers Program website that is phenomenal. Take a look: ywp.nanowrimo.org and here’s a short video plug:
The SMS Library is sponsoring a month of writing and writing encouragement, inspiration, and celebration for all students and staff who want to officially participate. Come to the library to learn more! Don’t delay; November is right around the corner!

We’re putting a giant jar in the library for the month of November to raise money to help families that impacted by the earthquake in Sumatra last month. This coin drive is sponsored by the SMS PTO. It is our hope that everyone at SMS will be able to contribute some spare change to help those who are in need of our assistance.
SMS teacher on leave, John Getzinger is working with his family in Sumatra this year. While they were not negatively impacted by the earthquake, many families of those they know and work with were. Mr. Getzinger made a short video asking for our help. You can view it here.

Attention all you readers: Readers Workshop will hold its first “meeting” on Wednesday, September 23 after school in the library. The agenda looks something like this:
2:30: Sign-in, grab a snack, make yourself comfortable, and read
3:00: Group discussion about what’s being read by members, what everyone wants to read next, what we want to remember about what we have read, etc. etc.
3:30: Library book preview. The library has some brand new books to put out on the shelves, but the Readers Workshop members get first dibs. We’ll take a look at the new titles, check them out, or put them on hold.
After that, if there’s still time, we’ll play a game like book bingo or Littergories (Scattergories with a literature theme). A schedule for the semester will be distributed at the meeting.
We hope to see you all there!

We’re really excited in the library to begin a new year of books, fun, reading, fun, activities, fun, and even more fun! Even our theme this year is fun: Surf’s Up! We’ll be organizing many activities through the library: Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Young Authors’ Conference, Read Across America, Book Fairs, and more. We’re also sponsoring a new after-school club. It’s called The Readers’ Workshop and will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, Septmeber 23. Click on the Readers’ Workshop tab at the top of this page for more details. As always, the library is here to support students and staff, whether it’s researching a topic for science class, finding the perfect book, or escaping to a quiet place to hang out during lunch. And the librarians love nothing more than helping their clients so please don’t ever hesitate to ask for help. Please drop in soon and check us out!
